Mainstream Fiction Example

This is an idea that came to mind as I was waiting around to meet a friend.  I saw this very intense looking guy smoking outside and thought, I could make a story about him….

A:  Tell me about your story

This is an example set of information as required in the 'Make a request' form.

General Information

Working TitleNone at the moment.
GenreMainstream
Main Character NameJim (?)
Main Character Description

Bit too skinny, darkish complexion, mouse grey hair, average heidth.  He’s very introverted, man of few words, dry sarcastic humour.  But he’s actually a really decent nice guy once you get to know him.  He’s around 30ish.  He’s a teacher.

Other Important Characters

Sarah.  Attractive, around 30ish.  Caucasian.  Auburn hair, fair-skinned.  She’s more outgoing than Jim.  She works in a shop as a sales person.

Setting and World

Any major English-speaking city will do for now.  Assume in the States.

Time PeriodCurrent time.

Plot

Summary of Plot (outline  / bullet form preferred)* Jim is standing outside a shop, quietly smoking a ciggie.
* Some woman is observing him and wondering how she can meet him.  She finally gets the nerve and goes over to him and asks him for a ciggie even though she doesn’t smoke.  They strike up a conversation (she never lights up).
* Next thing you know they hit it off and are getting coffee together.
* They go on their first ‘real’ date and it goes well.

Brainstorming Ideas

Some conflict is needed now to make it interesting.  And someone has to get angry or hurt in some way.

Jim seems like a mysterious guy.  She could discover something about him such as he….
* lied about his profession.  He’s actually…. oh, say working in a prison running the electric chair.  Sarah is against capital punishment so how does she deal with this?
* has a very mean, aggressive streak to him.  Sarah discovers this in his ill treatment of say the taxi driver or the waiter at the restaurant.
* has some phobia or obsession that she discovers by accident at his apartment on a sleepover date.  This makes her wonder how ‘normal’ he is.  She thinks maybe she should back out of the relationship.

A good question to ask yourself is how do their beliefs / values clash?

Some competition can also be introduced.  A friend of Sarah’s who is also interested in Jim?  What if the friend who is attracted to Jim is male?  And maybe Jim is attracted to him as well?

Or what if Sarah loses her job?  Or Jim loses his?  Or both of them?  How does this impact them?

How should the relationship end?
